form-driven designs
indoor public seating
Form Inspiration:
The social dynamic of three people sitting on a bench is awkward- shoulder to shoulder facing forward.
The concept of this piece is to facilitate social comfort in a space where strangers often congregate. The final design gives the illusion of a massive plank of wood that has been folded, placing those sitting on it at a comfortable social angle with one another (whether that is towards someone you wish to interact with, or away from someone you wish not to).
Materials & Production:
The bench is constructed entirely out of birch plywood, with the base painted a deep grey/ brown, and the seat covered in a white oak veneer. The bench easily disassembles into four manageable pieces for moving and transporting.
Press & Recognition:
This bench is a permanent piece in Pittburgh's Carnegie Library, donated August 2009.
